Het cultuurhistorische
belang van het materiele
erfgoed van westerse esoterische stromingen,
zoals vrijmetselarij, theosofie en antroposofie
stond centraal het internationale congres
‘Masonic and Esoteric Heritage’ (2005). Omdat
kunsthistorici en deskundigen uit de erfgoed-
sector doorgaans niet bekend zijn met de
geschiedenis en beeldentaal van esoterische
stromingen, bleef dit erfgoed tot nu toe
onderbelicht. Het congres bracht kunsthistorici
en monumentenzorgers voor het eerst in
dialoog met experts op het gebied van
westerse esoterie. Wetenschappers gaven
lezingen over de relatie tussen kunst en esote-
rie, en toonden de schitterende interieurs van
logegebouwen en tempels van ‘geheime’
genootschappen. Ook pleitten zij voor het
behoud van maçonnieke en esoterische
monumenten.
Het congres werd georganiseerd door de OVN,
stichting ter bevordering van wetenschappelijk
onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de vrij-
metselarij in Nederland, in samenwerking met
de leerstoel Cultureel erfgoed, conservering en
restauratie en de leerstoelgroep Geschiedenis
van de hermetische filosofie en verwante
stromingen (beide Universiteit van Amsterdam).
